Moriones Festival in Marinduque

Moriones Festival is celebrated annually in Marinduque, founded in year 1807 in Mogpog, Marinduque that was organized by Fr.Dionisio Santiago, a parish priest.

The meaning "Moriones" is referred to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for Saint Longinus, A Roman centurion who was blind in one eye. The Morions go to streets from Holy Monday to Easter Sunday. Part of the festival are the unique tradition of "Pabasa" and Santo Sepulcro in Good Friday were women are exchanging verses in the Bible as they stand in the wake of Jesus Christ. Another higlights of the Festival is Via Crusis, a re-enactment of the suffering of Jesus Christ on his way to calvary. Some men make self suffering by whipping their backs, carrying wooden cross and some are crucified.
